Un bell’inizio, “And I got your name / I got your name / Got your hand me down heart / I got your blood in my veins / I got your disposition / I got your mean / The way I stand in the kitchen / And I never listen / Call me Pauline“. She ain’t Los Angeles / Don’t roll off the tongue / She don’t sparkle like the lights of New York City She ain’t that kinda pretty / But she’s where I’m from“. I put on Aretha / Put on the Maybelline / I put all the dirty laundry in the washing machine / And mama needs a whiskey / Mama needs a break / Yeah, there’s only so much drama that mama can take“. Un’altra ballata emozionante e ben scritta, “Mamas chalkin’ up, placing bets / 8-ball corner pocket / She lights a cigarette / And daddy’s talkin’ trash / And he leans on back / And he winks at me / Like the apple of his eye didn’t fall far from the tree“. Un paio di minuti per sfogarsi, “I get stoned when I’m alone / But you’re finer than the high that I been on / Now get me lit, get me gone / Baby, take me on a trip that you’re on / Oh, I’m gettin’ slurry / Baby boy, ya got me blurry / Honey, I ain’t in a hurry to worry / Go on and get me slurry“. La voce della Ray è fragile e sicura allo stesso tempo, “He was nobody, somebody / A warm body when the winter came / I coulda bought a coat instead / A blanket for the foot of my bed / But I was too lonely, to be lonely / I shoulda known, I shoulda run away / But something always makes me stay / So, baby, won’t ya make me stay“. Commovente a partire dall’interpretazione e dalle parole. Un gioiellino all’interno di questo album, “These four walls are runnin’ out o’ days / Can’t be what it was / Even if ya stay / It’s another lonely winter / If ya never leave / Can’t take it up to heaven / Mama, can’t you see / That it’s just a house? / It’s just a house“. It’s a long way down / But I’m used to fallin’ by now / I can’t help it at all / When you look at me like that / I just take you back / I guess I’m fallin’ off the wagon again“. I cut my teeth on these barstools that I’m serving now / I watch all my friends grow up, and they just leave this town / Guess I’m lost again, right where I was found / Waiting, waiting / Thank God, I didn’t know at 22 / How goddamn long a dream takes to come true“. La famiglia torna al centro delle attenzioni di quest’artista, tratteggiando i momenti difficili, “Mama’s smokin’ in the kitchen, playing solitaire / She been burnin’ ‘em packs / With a monkey on her back since daddy ain’t there / She been swinging that axe / And picking up the slack and it ain’t fair / So I could sell my soul to rock ‘n’ roll“.
